Participants’ Personal Projects Take Shape!

Writers development group participants devise personal writing projects to develop over the year.

At this month’s meeting, I was thrilled when members shared their burgeoning work — including a whimsical set of children’s poems about ‘what’s inside a tortoise’s shell’  (if you’re lucky, he’ll invite you in for tea) and a comprehensive scrapbook-and-memoir entitled “Make Do and Mend with Mildred and Morris.”

We also covered broad territory in this month’s in-class exercise–a child’s eye account of an important life development.   Marilyn’s raw description of a severely disabled boy experiencing computer assisted therapy was particularly striking.

The exercise prompted me to finally begin a short story about my son’s reaction to a death in our family.  The group’s supportive, clear-eyed feedback made me realise that maybe I’m the one who needs these workshops most of all…

We meet next on Sunday, 12 August, at the Bell Pub, Kemsing, when we will experiment with concrete poetry.  Click here for examples to start you thinking.
